Chapter 129: Kuzunoha’s meeting

Translator: Hey guys, a translator talk here 🙂

The moment I translated the ‘Raidou breaks’ chapter, I was sure it would explode. I was actually looking forward to what would happen and you guys definitely didn’t let me down.

All your comments were awesome. The majority were actually constructive opinions and views in different angles. Of course there will be bashing towards Makoto, and they were all interesting as well. Makoto was struck with the truth after all. We all knew he was messing up as a merchant, but for the repercussion to come in such a… realistic manner. It was pretty surprising.

I honestly loved that chapter, and the reactions towards it make me love this community even more.

Keep it up guys. You are my motivation!

In the time when Princess Lily was troubled in stepping to action regarding Jin and the others…

At a section of the audience, two girls wearing clothes that remarkably stand out were sighing.

Raidou- Makoto’s followers, Tomoe and Mio.

The other follower, Shiki, was babysitting the students, so he was doing separate actions.

“How boring~. When there’s this much difference in power, it isn’t a fight but a show-ja na” (Tomoe)

“That’s why I was saying so since yesterday, wasn’t I? If they were not Waka-sama’s students, I wouldn’t even be here watching-desu wa” (Mio)

“If they were our students like with Shiki, we would be able to enjoy it in a different way but… Mio, what is that bizarre inflated bag-ja?” (Tomoe)

“What you ask, it is the specialty products of booths here and there-desu wa” (Mio)

“It is an answer, and yet it isn’t. No, what I am asking is about the amount-ja yo” (Tomoe)

At the side of Tomoe there’s Mio and further after, there’s several big light brown paper bags. Seeing that, she asks with enmity.

Mio’s answer was nonchalant, and she tells her that it is all food.

But what Tomoe wanted to know, is just as she said, the amount of it.

In the seats that are supposed to be fully occupied, one of them is being totally occupied.

To protect her honor, Mio explains that this is originally the seat of Makoto and because he can’t come, she is just utilizing it in an effective way.

In no way did she put all that food because she doesn’t want anyone else to come sit there.

“I will eat it all by the time we return, so don’t mind it. If you want me to share some with you, just say it honestly okay?” (Mio)

“I don’t need any. I feel like it might give me a heartburn” (Tomoe)

“Hmph, if this were alcohol, you would take it without doubt” (Mio)

The two of them leisurely watch the team battles unfolding in the stage while doing trivial talk.

There were no matches that were worth watching, and even in the matches with Jin and the others, the opponent was so weak it wasn’t fun.

Moreover, their master Makoto was not there.

Watching those matches earnestly might be something hard to do for these two girls.

“At this rate, I can’t expect much from tomorrow’s semifinal and finals. Well, we will be able to sit along with Waka, so that’s fine” (Tomoe)

“Same-desu wa. If I am together with Waka-sama, the place doesn’t matter” (Mio)

“Fumu, it seems it is done already-ja na. Mu” (Tomoe)

Tomoe and Mio notice something at the same time.

“Mio, Waka is calling-ja. We are going back” (Tomoe)

“I know already-desu wa. It seems he is slightly dispirited, so let’s hurry” (Mio)

Receiving a thought transmission from their master, Tomoe and Mio both nod and get up from their sits.

A short and straightforward thought transmission.

‘I have something I want to consult about, so I want you to return to the company’, is what he said.

A tone with no vigor.

While holding worry in their chest, they meet up with Shiki and return to the company.

◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆

“For the time being, it is fine to kill that representative-desu wa ne?” (Mio)

“Mio, the talk has not finished yet. Calm down first” (Tomoe)

“What stupid thing are you saying? I am completely calm-desu wa. Can’t you see that I clearly understand what I should do?” (Mio)

“That’s why I am telling you to wait for now. The talk has not finished yet-ja. Wait for a bit” (Tomoe)

“Such abusive language towards Waka-sama… abusive language… it wasn’t such a lukewarm level-desu wa ne? How should I kill him?” (Mio)

“Mio. I am telling you to hear what that very Waka has to say until the end-ja” (Tomoe)

After I finished telling the outline of what happened, Mio stood up and tried to leave the room.

I didn’t have the vitality to stop her immediately, so Tomoe took my place and inhibited Mio.

Even I could tell that Tomoe was looking at me with fainthearted eyes.

N?

Inhibited was it?

I feel like she didn’t stop her…

“As I thought, one of us should have gone as well”

It’s Shiki.

In terms of result, it is just as he said.

It might have been better if I had one of them accompany me.

If I had one of my followers with me, I felt like they would resolve it with strength. I thought that if that happened, then it would be pointless.

The first time Rembrandt-san met Tomoe, he was left completely speechless and was pretty withered.

I wanted to know the extent of the ill will the other merchants held towards me.

In the past, when I met Rembrandt-san the first time to give him the Ruby-eye’s eyes, it went well, so I thought maybe I would be able to hold my conversation if the other party was a merchant.

The context matched when I associated with Rembrandt-san, so even with the matter of Tomoe’s level, I think I would have been able to manage it properly. But this time, the representative was someone I had no connection with.

I didn’t want to prepare something like intimidation in our first meeting.

That naïve way of thinking led to this.

I was pushed into an unreasonable situation, made a fool of, and returned like a loser.

“Sorry for saying something like wanting to go alone” (Makoto)

“If one of us were with you, there’s the chance that place would have turned into a sea of blood, so not everything is bad. Don’t mind it that much” (Tomoe)

“Waka-sama is not in the wrong!” (Mio)

Tomoe tries to comfort me and Mio interposes with a rebuttal.

No, no matter how you think about it, the way I dealt with it was bad.

“Now that I think about it, not a single one of us has knowledge in business. We all began as novices. There might have been more ways to deal with it if we were introduced by Rembrandt-shi and taught the basics” (Shiki)

Not might. That’s what we should have done.

Before that, there’s the problem that even when I myself began a company just recently, I still went and did things here and there, neglecting the business.

And in truth, the company still did well.

No, that’s how it looked.

That’s why it brought upon more negligence.

It may be this late of a time to do so, but I have to reflect on it.

“Shiki, even you! Why does Waka-sama have to feel down?! In the first place, Waka-sama was displeased by the shortage of medicines that can’t reach the hands of the people and were easily losing their life, so he aspired to spread medicines, right?! Why does he have to learn how to act around those merchants to not be resented?! He is doing something that’s good for everyone, and yet, why?! Isn’t this ridiculous?!” (Mio)

The words of Mio that were trying to cover for me no matter what, were grinding at my heart.

That’s right.

I wanted to sell medicine in order for everyone to have an easy way of reaching out to it.

For that reason, I wanted to do business widely without minding which country it was.

Because of circumstances, we also handle various miscellaneous goods as well, but those are just extras.

Doing something good.

Because I had that thinking in a part of me, maybe that’s why I only looked at the people I was selling to.

Not doing anything excessive with the price because of people of the same trade, the counter-plans I did for the copies and resale; those were the only things I thought of.

And in truth, even the price might be questionable. We collected everything ourselves, had the people needed for the compounding, and left it to a point where we would barely escape deficit.

That is… within the range?

That’s probably not it.

Since the time the people made a rude comment of my demi-human employees, I haven’t gone to the meetings of the merchants in the area.

Lately, Akua, Eris and the eldwa craftsmen have grown more accustomed to socializing with hyumans. But, even so, it was most likely an error to not relate with the merchants around.

Ignoring association must have made the impression of Kuzunoha Company even more ominous.

Even if I have good intentions, a business is a business.

There will obviously be competition.

There will be people who would want to eliminate the ones who have the same target of customers, and if you do something that stands out, the big companies will place an eye on you.

I didn’t make a method to cope with it when something like that happened, and have continued until this day.

As expected, I can’t order to eliminate them just because they have kept an eye on us after all.

In Tsige it was different, but in Rotsgard I don’t have any backing.

In other words, I was defenseless.

“Mio, that’s just idealistic talk. It isn’t just distributing. As long as we are doing a business, these kind of things happen. I won’t say Waka has done nothing wrong, but I have to admit we were somewhat defenseless” (Tomoe)

“… I hold the same opinion. Of course, it is true that I should have acted in a better way. I have no excuse” (Shiki)

“!!! There’s something wrong with you guys! Even though Waka-sama is the absolute rule! The stupid ones are the merchants that are only looking at the near future!” (Mio)

Mio would most likely stand by my side no matter what happens.

Even if I were to turn into a fiend, even if I were to become the enemy of the whole world, she would still be willing to fall to the same place as I am.

That’s why I have to put myself together.

If she falls so far, that’s all my responsibility.

As if persuading myself, I try to kill the unfair anger that’s inside me.

At the very least, I don’t think this is something that is fine to solve with just violence.

The existence of Mio who is willing to give her everything for me, prevented my current unstable emotions from rampaging.

“… Waka. That representative said things that are difficult to forgive, but he also said good things. How about it? I think that since we have the chance, there’s also the option of giving up on hyumans and opening a store in the villages of demi-humans” (Tomoe)

“Serving only demi-humans?” (Makoto)

“Yes. If you wish to, we can also serve demonic beasts and mamonos. Also, Waka told me, that you wanted the four seasons. I don’t think Waka likes conflict, so you probably intent to have a relationship with the demon race in order to secure that place right? Then, I think it should be fine to do business with them. Continuing business in the hyuman society and having our hearts crushed, it would only create more weight in Waka, and I don’t think that’s a good idea” (Tomoe)

“The demon race publicly hates hyumans, but they are generous towards other races. I think the proposal of Tomoe-dono is worth considering” (Shiki)

“I… don’t understand complicated stuff. But I don’t think there’s a need for Waka-sama to be under people that just want to take advantage of Waka-sama’s kindness” (Mio)

Kindness huh.

Maybe I was looking at it that way in some part of me.

And, maybe the people around saw it that way as well.

“I…” (Makoto)

“Waka, please tell us what you are currently thinking. If Waka so wishes, we will fight with whoever. Also… we will lower our heads to whoever you wish us to” (Tomoe)

Mio and Shiki nod at Tomoe’s words.

Right. There’s no need to hide anything from them.

They are my family in this world after all.

“… Just like I promised to Tomoe, I plan on having a connection with the demon race. After a conversation with one of the demon generals, I promised a meeting with the Demon Lord. It will be after the school festival is over, but I intent to meet with the Demon Lord and ask it to let me take over or borrow one location where Tomoe says the four seasons are in” (Makoto)

I resolve myself and tell the three what I was thinking.

Tomoe nods with a joyful look and glittering eyes.

Shiki looks like he consents. He silently nods with his eyes closed.

Mio simply accepted my words and was smiling.

“If that happens, it will create a big debt towards the demon race. Talking to the demon lord. I can’t say anything definite, but I don’t think it will end in a simple manner. Will the hegemony of this world continue in the hands of the Goddess and hyumans, or will it be plundered by the demon race? We might even have to participate in that conflict. If I had to speak my ideal scenario, it may be naïve, but it would be to hold a connection with the demon race while continuing business with the hyumans. But depending on the situation, I don’t know what would happen” (Makoto)

I bring a world map from the shelf and spread it on the desk. And then, I place a hand on the location Tomoe pointed out before.

“This was the place right, Tomoe?” (Makoto)

“Yes. That’s the place” (Tomoe)

“The previously associated country of Elysion, Kaleneon. The place is around Yamagata prefecture and Tsukiyama huh” (Makoto)

The place that will provide Asora with the four seasons.

And also the place that is deeply connected with the two hyumans I met.

“Yamagata?” (Tomoe)

“Nothing. Just pointless rambling. What’s important is what I said before that. It’s a country named Kaleneon. That place… seems to be the native country of my parents” (Makoto)

“?!”

“My parents met there, and after that, they became adventurers, traveled, and transferred to my world. In other words, to me, it is also my home in a sense. Of course, that has nothing to do with the four seasons, so it is fine to ignore that point for now” (Makoto)

I have no emotional attachment at all anyways.

If possible, I would be happy to obtain even a little bit of information of my parents, but it is a country that has fallen to ruin.

The demon race probably knows more information of Kaleneon.

If they didn’t turn everything into ash when they invaded that is.

“But Waka-sama, if I remember correctly, Kaleneon is the place the librarian Eva and Gotetsu’s Ruria…” (Shiki)

As if remembering something, Shiki says the name of the Ansland sisters.

“That’s right. The birthplace of those girls. That’s why I had each of them decide something. If both of them accept, I…” (Makoto)

I tell the three of them what I was thinking.

That’s my last resort.

It may be a foolish thought that can’t even be called resort though.

But…

“Fu… fufufu. Isn’t that interesting, Waka?” (Tomoe)

“Right. Depending on how it is done, it might even become a card to solve our current problem” (Shiki)

“If it’s something Waka-sama has decided, I don’t have any objections. Also, I think it is stupid to not use the strength we have and just worry” (Mio)

My family accepted it.

In that case, as Kuzunoha Company’s Raidou, and also, as the third one to descend to this world…

Well, the two heroes are in the hyuman side, so it should be fine for one to be behind-the-scenes on the demon race side right, bug Goddess?

  2. I find it slightly amusing that he would always go on about trying to prevent things from existing but then when he gets hit in the face with how naive he is. He breaks down.

If he has the resolve to prevent other countries from doing things that he dislikes why doesn’t just do the easiest thing and just kill the representative?

I mean he is basically already a Crime Boss, no matter what he thinks.

    *waiting for hate*

      1. I never said it was the best or smartest thing to do.

        He fucked up.

Should have killed him right away, and so the guild would fear him.

Easiest thing to do. Not the best or most peaceful.

But that’s what I expect from him at this point.

        Like

      2. I think what @Psy meant was, what would it accomplish other than scaring the guild? will it change how the merchants/nobles that complained about his store see him?

the Representative is only “still” a representative of the Merchant Guild. He’s replaceable. Makoto said it’s misplaced “anger”. It should be the merchants who is antagonizinh his store that be culled not the representative that is only doing his job. At least that’s my opinion.

    1. You have been reading to many Wuxia novels killing everyone and striking fear into the hearts of everyone isn’t exactly how the world goes round, at the heart of it, it does but if some random no body comes in gets insulted and kills a representative it doesn’t strike fear into their hearts its strikes anger and the need for retaliation.

Obviously you have said it isn’t the smartest choice and all, but it also isn’t the simplest. The best route is to say: Fine bite the hand that feeds? I’ll just go feed someone else and you can just suffer.

      1. also, you obviously didn’t read my posts because I didn’t saying anything it being the smartest choice. kid. I said easiest.

    2. Killing the representative is not about being the easiest or the smartest. Its just pointless. It would bring absolutely no benefits to them other than getting revenge for badmouthing him (which he partially deserved and also its isn’t a reason to kill someone over it).
It wasn’t the representative who started this or was pulling the strings. Its not like he is some kind of evil criminal lord trying to extort the company. They used underhanded but still somehow legal (or at least the ones in power are making it legal this time) methods to corner them. This time the whole merchant guild is against them, forced by those other powers.
The moment the Kuzunoha company resorts to violence they lose all their remaining rights and will be dealt like a criminal organization and they can just destroy it (well or at least they can try). That moment they already abandoned being merchants.

There are really few who know their real military power so no one considers them a threat that can’t be removed by those countries and big companies.
The only way he could benefit from making them fear him is if he showcases their power in a national level and demonstrates that not even the big countries can oppose him. Only if he achieves that no one in that world would dare to go against him (not even the goddess) would let him to use that in his benefit as a merchant.
But at that point it would be already easier to just plunder and conquer and it would make all their efforts to stay hidden so far pointless.

      1. I’m not reading any of that, not just because it’s most likely completely wrong and foolish but also because my comment is 3 months old and I don’t care what you have to say.

I know that my comment is right, the only reason why you’re replying to me is because you’re being irrational because someone doesn’t agree with your misconceptions.

        Good day to you.

Who is the one being irrational and foolish here replying because someone disagreed with your lacking logic? I guess you are the one.
Just because you know you are wrong and can’t say anything to prove you are right you can’t just proclaim that “hurr durr i am right and you are wrong” and then expect others to agree with you..

You can’t even argue to defend your dumb ideas so instead you do nothing but insult others.
I’m only getting upset about how retarded you are.

As i said, you can’t just proclaim that you are right (when you are obviously not) without at least trying to explain why. Only dumb and/or crazy people do that and really expect that others will agree with them.
Tell me the reasons why you think you are right and i am wrong?

      5. As i said I knew I was right from the beginning.

Only a narcissistic Cretin like you will go out of their way to bother someone over something as stupid as disagreeing with them on a post. Especially after I specifically told you that I don’t care what you think.

I just said I haven’t actually read any of your posts.

So you replying to me is just you stroking your own ego.

You’re calling me a child. When you’re the one being a little cunt. Now fuck off.

      6. Are you seriously saying that to me? You are the one attacking me for having a different opinion than you. So all that you just said is just describing you.

Now i reached chapter 151 and i see no explanation of why would have been better to kill that representative.
I don’t know what were you reading but it actually confirmed what i said.
They just had to showcase their power in front of the influencial people to intimidate them a little. Just killing some merchant wont achieve that.
They had to show their power without antagonizing them too much because if they are considered too much of a threat than their only option will be to try eliminating that threat.
In the end they might just turn that representative Zara into one of their allies with Rembrandt’s help.

  3. Hm, didn’t Raidou say that his resupply method is teleportation and that he has someone who has huge magical power to use it?

    My hypothesis is this:

That representative is gonna tell Raidou’s resupply method to the other merchants.
The Big Shots will try to search for information on who that individual is.
When they fail that, they’ll just kidnap someone who has a deep knowledge on the inner workings on Kuzunoha. Tomoe and Mio are out, since even just one of them can bring total annihilation to their doorstep (And they have a bone to pick with the merchants). Guessing it’ll be Shiki or one of the dwarves.
    Makoto hears about it.
The next Chapter will read “Raidou goes nuclear on their asses”.

    1. I doubt they can kidnap Shiki, he’s a former Lich and got stronger by making a pact with Makoto, he’s the weakest out of the 4 but by no means someone like a mere hyuman can harm(even the heroes will probably get their asses hauled as well).

      Like

      1. Maybe Shiki will let them kidnap him, then use their communication method to inform Makoto where he’s been taken.

Makoto will then get Rembrandt to act on his behalf in contacting the proper authorities to help “rescue” Shiki (and catch the perpetrators red handed).

While that is being put into work, Makoto will get the rest of his subordinates to quickly figure out who is the “mastermind” behind this incident, and have them kidnapped and planted next to Shiki just before the authorities storm the location, thus making sure the one who gave the orders will be caught.

After all, they’re still some big shot merchants. We should give them enough credit not to expect them to be foolish enough to personally attend the interrogation.

  5. Thinking clearly, he could win just with reasoning, just like oh.. you’re telling a merchant that can easily distribute medicine cheaply and transport them easily to go to sell to demons, lets see what the 4 countries will react when they know you’re sending aid to the demon side just because you’re a greedy pig bastard, by the way i have contact with the Lorel priestess and she can communicate that to the other 3 countries.

The reaction of the representative would be priceless…

    1. Hell, seeing how they are already trying to gain him as an asset because of his teaching methods alone, they leaders would likely present him the heads of teh merchant guild as compensation.

Let’s not forget, the average hyumans think all is well with the war effort, the leaders know better and are actually in quite a bind.

  6. didn’t expect to see a chapter on NU so early.

Even though I know that Mio is only being Mio. Mio needs to be less Mio from time to time. I’m glad Shiki and Tomoe did not simply comforted Makoto. Well in the end, nothing was learned from his blunder since they still licked Makoto’s wounds, he sort of contemplated his mistakes but that’s just his usual monologue that no one ever is going to hear, I was hoping he learned sth from it. I sincerely hope he finds a companion soon that will point out his mistakes frankly, unlike the current three. Shiki has potential but he has two women who would bully him again… Ema-chan would be perfect for it as shown from the previous chapter but unfortunately, REALLY UNFORTUNATELY, she is not being loved by this Author. Just why… is it because she’s not human in appearance? then maybe when Makoto finally goes to Kaleneon…

    A.n.y.way.

although there’s no progress, character growth-wise, I guess it was just me excitedly expecting too early.

Thanks for the decent and early chapter.

    “Sorry customers. We’re closing our branch here and opening up a new branch in demon territory because Merchant Association demands us to either;

    1. Disclose our shipping technology for free.
    2. Pay 90% of our profit to association for an indefinite amount of time.

If we are unable to comply to this demand, we will be slandered as demon supporter.

Since we’re going to be slandered anyway, why don’t we just sell our excellent products that will pretty much heal all injury to hyuman’s biggest enemy – demon anyway? At least we’ll get their protection.

Anyway, good luck bitches. Go blame Merchant Association, thank you and good bye.

1 > Mio always takes makoto`s side not because for her its an almighty absolute god, she always takes that side because she never again want to being seen like an unneded piece of shit for having other interests, meaning she always wants as possible taking his side so he will always look for her in time he thinks he its doing wrong or not, ( though indeed might be a bad direction but in reality makoto take her actions as a brake for him as well since he notice that his actions will bring specially someone down with him )

2 > makoto didnt snap there because of the menacing words of representative telling he its a demon colaborator. he didnt snap because he mentioned that he would bring trouble to rembrandt, thats why once the matter has solved he easily could take the suggestion and cut relations with rembrandt before and then simply close its shop and go open in demihumans setlements, with the notice that was merchant guilds fault. like that no more trouble for rembrandt on the looks on hyumans Aside corrupt ones of course.

i am quite interested in the offers for eva and ruria, but i am confused now, at first i thought he might gave this shop for them to manage BUT thx to this sudden plot twist, i could say that he might takes them with him to demon race

but the problem of my doubts its that the offer came before the meeting so thats what getting me confuse

    1. I think that since the meeting with the Demon Lord was already established he had planned to ask for that place, not sure what he was going to offer as compensation thou.

But seeing how the demons really, really, don’t want Makoto to join the hyuman cause he probably has a good shot at getting that territory.

Hyuman : Greed, Lust, and Desire which is something we know from BAD NOBLE AND MERCHANT
Demon: Knowledge, Wisdom, and Fortitude which is something Demon want to gain better right off on

P.S. The 3 mental form on Demon have is something the Raidous’ students are taught by Makoto and Shiki which we pretty much know they are training and mental force in more effective than Hyuman.

  15. Thank you for the chapter!

Ouch, if they don’t play their card right, and soon, the hyumans are going to lose the war big time.

Not because of the might of Asora, simply because Makoto’s strategic mind can compensate for any strategy the hyumans, meaning the heroes, can come up with add the portals = game over for hyumans… And this is before the whole “powerful army of demi-humans and unparalleled existences like Mio, Tomoe and Shiki” thing is taken into consideration.

    Like

    1. Strategic mind? Wasn’t the Raidou Breaks chapter exactly because he doesn’t gave that?

Any ideas he can come up with, the heroes probably can too.
….well Hibiki probably can at least.

      Like

    2. I’m with the above. Raidou doesn’t have a “strategic” mind or is at least able to give strategies than any experience commander or general of an army cant in the battlefield. Ofc, he proposed some “ideas” to his students and another way of fighting but, even that, was already being utilized by tge demon army long before according to Lily.

Makoto simply doesn’t have that cunningness and even experience in commanding a legion to be able to give decent “strategies”. Not unless he had read/studied something of the sort in his previous world like Souma. At most, he will only push trough solely by his/their overwhelming power. The only reason that can turn over the hyumans or demon side’s well-thought strategy is power, brute overwhelming power, of Makoto. It’s like Ainz trampling over hundred of thousands of soldiers in one swing of his hands.

      1. Yeah I phrased that wrong, I mean his ability to teach the basics of real combat.

Which he has trough having taught children archery in the previous world and not being a complete moron.

The second is why he came up with the same combat system as the demons, as in using a strategy beyond “hit hard from the front until someone is dead”.

  16. I really wish he would go all mafia boss on the merchant guild.
horse heads on beds, implied and overt threats they can’t actually pin on him, and possibly just showing (some of) the difference in power they have.

Makoto’s biggest problem is that he is trying to play a game he does not know the rules of, has no skills to use in, and takes more time than he has.
    Answer to this problem?
    Change the game.
Few (temporary) disappearances, some choice (untraceable) assassinations, couple overt threats in the right ears.

Or if he wants to go easymode, conquer a nation and install a puppet ruler and instal your company there.
Maybe start offering mercenary services? not for open warfare, but for bodyguards and security.

Maybe start offering mercenary services? not for open warfare, but for bodyguards and security.”

I believe that’s the current plan, reclaim the sisters’ lost kingdom in what would look like a show of strength to the hyumans but was in fact negotiated with the demons.

Basically have Makoto’s forces take back the fortress the heroes could not take, push until the territory of his parents, fortify the position and claim it as an independent, demi-human friendly, nation that is willing to do business with hyumans and serve as an advanced post for the war (meaning they hyumans can’t refuse).

But on the down low sells to the demons as well, while we have both sides trying to gain monopoly of Asora’s military and mercantile might.

      Like

  17. Yeah, I don’t get all of this. They don’t want you/threaten you? Who fucking cares, just leave them be forever and go for the demon’s side. Hyumans showed him time after time how shitty they are, so just leave them behind, maybe just take a few of them with you (his friends), and go over to the demon’s side. Not only that, announce you will go to them. “You don’t want my shit? You don’t want my huge help? Fuck you, I’m bringing everything over to the demons”… It’s simple, really.

    1. My guess is he would, if only to keep him and his people out of the war effort, also we know the demons live in a waste land, meaning whatever products he would sell would be most welcome since they have next to nothing.

Keep in mind the Demon Lord is the only person not part of Makoto’s inner circle to know he’s getting closer and closer to the “Bug” in power, the very 1st time we have the Demon Lord talk to his generals he talks about a 3rd hero who is already as powerful as him, this was a long time ago too.

      Like

      1. Correction, they lived (past tense) in the wastelands.

Then they huffed and puffed a little and blew several hyuman kingdoms away, claiming those lands for their own. Including the kingdom that was the “closest” to the bug, and her favorite. 😀

IIRC the lands that the demons currently occupy are the most fertile and rich in resources around, and one of the main reasons why hyumans want them back so much.

Of course the demons aren’t satisfied with what they have. They’ve taken too much s**t from hyumans for too long and now want to put hyumans in the position they themselves were in before.

      2. I was under the impression that without the Goddess blessing the land was more or less worthless thou?

Maybe she keeps blessing the land even if there are no hyumans living there and I missed it?

      3. Nah, she took over the world from the dragons, did a little touch up on it, then went to get a manicure or something and let things play out on their own.

She sometimes blesses hyumans when they beg her enough, but she’s not the responsible type that takes good care of her “creations” (she’s never really created anything, just taken what’s already there and changed it a little, be it the world or the hyumans – and she’s supposedly ranked as a goddess of creation among the divine, what a waste).

I mean, if the lands required constant blessing from her, then everywhere would be a wasteland when she went to sleep for a few decades (or however long that was).

  20. Okay, I get that he’s pissed at having failed here, but honestly that’s on him for the most part, even if that other guy was a jerk about it. He got outsmarted. Everything we seem to know about the demons so far puts them as even MORE cunning and manipulative though (although they have a good reason for it), so I’m not sure this will really help him out. Not to mention that making the rumors about him true is basically abandoning all the connections he’s made with humans so far, as well as his place at the university. I’m not even sure why he cares about this so much since he clearly isn’t even intending to be running a proper business in the first place.

This seems like a bad idea. He’s basically rage quitting.

    Like

    1. In a sense, yeah. But really, what sort of attachment does he have for the hyuman side that makes it worth staying and putting up with their shit? Rembrandt and his students are hardly worth living among a spoiled race for.

Demons seem more likely to show him some respect and have some basic human decency. They might be as or even more devious, but their base relationship with Makoto would be different as well so Makoto’s power can probably defend a bit better.

      Like

      1. It’s not about having an attachment to hyumans or not.
It’s about not running away the second there’s some pushback.
He has the resources, the skills, the personel and the connections to really make himself a power player in the local economical and political landscape, heck, he can do that while remaining mostly unknown to anyone but some keyplayers.
There’s also the fact that his disappearance would cause some questions now (and probably cause trouble to his hyuman allies/friends), not to mention that just leaving hyuman side would mean going back on his decision to be neutral in the conflict.

He has everything he needs to win the game he joined in when becomming a merchant, if he chooses to utilize them.
I doubt he will, but he could.

Which is a pity, because i think the story of Makoto becomming a smuggler/mafia boss while keeping public storefronts available on both sides (with different names) and also training students to pass the time and give him cover as he educates himself about the world could be lot more interesting than the story i suspect we are getting.

      2. Spoiled race? Besides maybe the occasional comment on his appearance (which monsters and demons have been doing as well, I might add), the only other real problems he’s had so far is just being suspicious of his incredibly suspicious and mysterious circumstances, a problem which has only gotten as bad as it has because he handled the whole situation so poorly. Besides that, what other problems has he faced? Too many marriage proposals? A guy trying to sabotage him he was completely oblivious to the existence of until right now? Kinda boring tournaments because they suck at strategy?

And I don’t think we have any basis to think that the demon race will be better or show any kind of respect. It’s more likely that he’d be even MORE of an outsider there. We’ve seen nothing to imply that demons are any more civil, and in fact have only have evidence to the contrary.

The one redeeming feature of the demon’s side would be that he wouldn’t need to hide himself from the goddess, a point which becomes a lot less appealing when you consider that this means being drawn into WAR with said goddess.

      3. Umu. Good point. I’ve been assuming that the demon race would welcome Makoto, but that in itself is getting ahead, isn’t it?

I think it’s because anytime we get the perspective of the demon races, they’re a lot more…how do I put it…earnest? Honest? They have a flavor of only pursuing war for self-survival while hyumans have as a whole been very self-entitled.

      4. I disagree that his latest decision is ‘running away’. He made it look or narrated it like he was but c’mon… doing ‘business’ with the ‘enemy’ is a plan. A direct challenge and made rationally at that, with consideration of the feedback & meeting he had with Tomoe, Mio & Shiki. Rational. And that is still manning up. And you call that cowardice?

      5. Psychronia – Our biggest interaction with demons so far has been Rona, who is the very definition of dishonest. But you’ve read the latest chapter by now, so you know that. We know the goddess is against them, but they seem just as genocidal against humans. Really the blame seems to belong with the goddess (although we don’t really know why she does what she does either), but otherwise humans and demons both just seem to be just generally genocidal.

BlackWing – Yeah, it’s cowardice, or at least a huge mistake. He is 100% running away. He messed up, got called out on it, and now he’s running. He’s enacting this “plan” because his hand was forced, not because it’s a good idea. In fact, it’s a bad idea, as I’ve argued.

  21. He should’ve done that from the very beginning. Join the demons, that is. I mean, think about it: the absolute leader of the hyumans (the Goddess) is your absolute nemesis. After knowing all the shit she did, it’s clear that the demons are clearly the “good guys” of this world. Also, that final thought of his: 2 heroes for the hyumans, 1 for the demons. I think it would’ve been way better if it was like that from the very beginning. Hyumans are 99% scum, after all. Not saying that there isn’t scum amongst the demons, but I really think they’re way better than them, at least they’re not on the Goddess’s side. That’s a good start.

But frankly that’s a little coward of him, there are many way to deal with blackmailing in business like: siding with the church, offer alliance to Empire/Kingdom, legalizing the production from Asora via Adventurer Guild with the help from Root, sabotage the merchant guild’s fame so no-one gonna believe in them.
Naive with kindness is a sin, you know. However, we may have some good story-arc toward the demons soon so all it’s good.

    1. I think what happened was something like this: The representative stated that people want Makoto to reveal his transportation method and its details. Makoto wanted to resolve it with money, which the representative countered with the fact that the bribe would be 90% of sales(estimation) and he would still need to tell the rep himself the method so that the guild will acknowledge it.

The 90% is to keep the other companies from using the method.

About the “Raidou breaks”, he could just do business directly with the heads of the major powers and others countries’as they want to be in touch with him), and his business wouldn’t need any interraction with the merchant guild(or, after some times, even push some strings to eject the dumbass who talked to him like a jerk…)…

There’s no way he will suddenly leave his students, i mean Shiki just informed them that after the festival, they gonna enter the next phase of the training after all.. I think his time in Rostgard is still a bit prolong to the future..
I wonder what he asked to the Kaleneon Noble Sister that need them to think over it without sleeping.. Something like accompany him to the meeting with the demon lord regarding the rise of the Kaleneon using Demon Camp Connection maybe..?
And I totally blind at how he will resolve his trouble with Merchant guild but judging from Mio’s last comment, it definitely has something to do with abusing their abnormal power.. Their connection isn’t that much yet after all..
Also about how he will deal the representatives of all major power of hyuman countries… How will he rejecting them all… He totally failed at handling the Lorel’s representative before after all..

  37. I really dont understand all this… The guild guy say strength is useless in buisness ? The hell with that : Makoto controls all the production line of his products and cannot be threathened on it. He doesn’t have transport ways and thus his cargo cannot be targeted. His rivals can’t obstruct his buisness since they can’t win on the quality and the cost of the products and even if they try to use their wealth to buy all his stuff before the usual buyers well Makoto set a limit of objects by person so… He is untouchable on the economic and buisness aspect : As he doesn’t really need the guild, he can leave it as well : He has already its adventurer fanbase and thus even with the restrictions he can sell to a steady amount of people and then it will slowly grow from rumors. If the guild use the politics to force him to stop then… Suprise ! He can use his own strength to deal with it : A Lime/Mio/Tomoe surprise in the lord chamber at night with light threats and it’s done ! Who said strength isn’t usefull in buisness ? Owned dude ! And then now who can stop him to trade with demons as well ?

    Like

    1. You’re right to be confused. That guy, even if he didn’t know Raidou the adventurer’s real strength, he did know enough about Raidou the merchant to be wary. That he wasn’t means he’s probably too used to people doing as he says, because he has the guild’s authority behind him.

As for Makoto running a business without the Merchant Guild’s blessing, that may not be possible. Guild’s are essentially monopolies that have great influence in terms of laws relevant to their trade, and maybe also the authority to enforce those laws.

If you don’t have permission from the guild to run a store, they can have it seized, and even put you in jail, or at least slap a huge fine on you. There’s no way Makoto could go against that, without outright resorting to physical violence and crushing the guild. Which would mark him an enemy of the state (all the hyuman states, since the guild is everywhere).

He could still sell to people directly, but it would mean he’d have to be the one to approach them, which would be a lot of trouble.

      Anyway…

What the representative was referring to was physical strength and strength in magic, and the reason he called them useless in business is because he was using the average adventurer-turned-merchant as a basis.

It’s true that someone like that wouldn’t be able to use their strength to accomplish anything meaningful, because any successful merchant would be able to afford to hire enough bodyguards to counter such an adventurer.

The representative simply cannot imagine that Makoto is not an average adventurer, with more strength than any country, which he could use to crush any puny merchant before breakfast. They probably underestimate his strength based on his looks (and might even have learned he’s only level 1, if Root didn’t interfere), and because most of Kuzunoha’s employees are demi-hyumans, which most hyumans are prejudiced against and automatically consider inferior.

I do agree that the representative is a fool. Since he’s a representative of the Merchant Guild (and by how the meeting was describe, it’s an important position), he should be more pragmatic about this whole thing.

So the noob merchant Raidou has access to teleportation on a scale that allows him to restock every day, and he can apparently still turn a profit despite his ridiculously low prices, which suggest he’s likely in control of the entire supply chain, and a very efficient one at that.

Yeah, let’s be a d*** and antagonize him from the start. Burn that bridge like there’s no tomorrow, because people respond well to that kind of treatment. After all, it’s not like being a merchant is about forming connections. /s

I honestly don’t know if the representative actually believed that Raidou would accept any of the ridiculous “offers”, but if he did, then I have to wonder how he got the position in the first place. He’s like an elephant in a china shop. No subtlety or finesse. No speaking between the lines, or vague statements that could mean anything.

He didn’t even try to become Raidou’s “friend”, and use that false sense of trust to pump Raidou for information. It was more along the lines of a highway robbery, actually.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. The merchant rep is not only astupid in going in straight instead of using subtlety.
He is also wrong about adventurers strength being useless as a merchant.
One of the easiest ways to get rid of competition is to simply make sure they have no merchandice.
Hits into warehouses, torching down storefronts, ambushing shipments…

Dedicated, competent adventuring team with even fairly basic knowledge of their target could utterly mess up a merchants business (or atleast considerably increase their expenses due to increased protection).

        Like

      2. I was under the impression that the offers he gave Raidou weren’t really offers so much as warnings and realistic advice(under the assumption that Raidou didn’t have the power of a calamity because that’s common sense) though.
Most of what he said were factual: “These people suspect you and are making these accusations”, “We need to confirm your transportation method”, “Bribing is a bad idea, because it’s big companies that want to know and it would cost you 90%”, “You should close down your store and go get Rembrant to mentor you more”, “You should go sell in markets where these big companies won’t bother you, to demihumans”.

He was rude because he found Makoto’s approach to be too naive and lack a merchant’s discretion(like with how direct the bribe was or revealing a lie moments after making it), but otherwise he was giving the best objective advice he thought would be best for Raidou at that point.

        Like

      3. I agree with the position that what the Vice-Head said was, objectively, little more than sound advice and objective observations cloaked in a mask of racism, anger, and contempt. Including the part about “I’m actually treating you nicer than I would normally, because Rembrandt is backing you.”

I would disagree that he did it out of any good will however. I see it as more of a case of sometimes you can be more honest with someone you dislike than someone you like. And he probably really dislikes the way Raidou’s handled his business. (Not trying to make connections, choosing to ignore other store keepers, doing things without worrying about consequences, automatically assuming money will solve all his problems, etc.)

The cruelest insults are the ones that reflect reality, and in this case that would be regarding Raidou’s naivete and unknowing reliance on Rembrandt’s power.

Even Rembrandt admitted that had Raidou not been the one to save his family, he would have taken similar actions.

I do think it was foolish of the Vice-Head to not try and make lasting connections with Raidou, but I think of it like this: he probably sees it the same way we might react if an NBA team put Kobe Bryant’s son on the court today. We KNOW the kid will be incredible when he grows up, but he has no place in a professional arena until that time and after he’s put in the requisite hard work. And the anger might come from if the kid seemed to seriously think he was on par with the adult players.

      4. No, there was absolutely no good will behind his advice.

Most of that was probably as a favor to Rembrant and the rest was him looking down on Makoto due to misevaluation.

      5. I feel like you put this very well. He certainly was dismissive and heavy-handed in laying into Makoto. Then again he may be confident given the level of those lodging the complaints, and then reacting to Makoto’s clear ineptitude at how he handled the beginning of the conversation. He may have begun the conversation with the thought that Makoto was a hidden gem, but he ended it with the solid idea that he was a guppy in the shark tank.

And Makoto for his part did nothing to indicate otherwise. Fission Mailed?

Well, I don’t think Makoto will simply leave the hyumans side. He made that proposition to Eva and Ruria even before the tournament. And he also said “behind the scenes”… so he should definitely keep his Merchant front in Rotsgard!

it finally come, makoto got spanked.
apart from all the shits he did, the root of everything is none of them have enough knowledge or experience on commerce. the only relation he got was rambrant because of luck, and he didn’t try to meet the other marchands in academy town.
I don’t think he can recover from that situation without closing his shop, learn how to manage it, and restart from zero. or maybe hiring a competent human manager.
even if you take out the shop, they worked on the teaching, asora’s managing and recruting of new people. too much thing they weren’t skilled enough, and forgot the shop.

he should either abandon all his marchand thing, or learn everything from rambrant.
if he got to the demon side, and try again, the odds are high that he will get fucked even harder, the demons are probably better schemers than humans.

I expect that he will not resolve everything by pure violence. it would be boring.

  40. GJ On the translation Reigokai

“(Ara, it might have been a short time, but they are acquaintances that took the same class as me. If that’s the case, I will push myself the most I can. The payment will be meeting the demon lord once, how about it?) (Rona)”

  42. ohh sry nvm you are meaning
“Well, the two heroes are in the hyuman side, so it should be fine for one to be behind-the-scenes on the demon race side right, bug Goddess?”

my opinion is: he is to much OP to side with some 1
But the merchants are not helping

  43. That representative said was true but he made a big mistake more than Raidou.
    He misjudge Raidou.
He think Raidou is merchant who has only rambrant backup.
He think Raidou has moderate adventure employee.
He not interested in tournaments because the day he choose to call.
    He is not investor.
He choose make enemy with readers and calamity .

maybe he was selected by age and power not personality.

  44. I highly doubt Raidou will completely go over the Demon Race side reason being: In a chapter before the tournament Rona hinted on doing something major in Rotsgard. She knows that Hyuman leaders are attending the festival. She’s either planning assassinations or chaos by proxy.

Whichever it is sooner or later Raidou will find out and he will most likely just take back the land he wants from them by force.

  45. i read this chap over and over lately… makoto is adorable in this chapter ❤

a family really is important specially when away from the real one…

my thoughts for what's coming: rebuild kaleneon, the two sisters will manage it… rebuild the company… accessible to demons mostly…

question: what will happen to his class promise?

  46. I just realized something important, since kuzunoha has an all heal medicine and Io has super regenative power it will all come down to stamina endurance, but they have energy drink as well, isnt that already favorable to hyumans?

And all those favourable things that have happened to the hyuman side like the heroes changing, getting new equipment and all the sort of things are thanks to kuzunoha and his aides.
Wouldnt it be nice for makoto to changing sides to demon and him showing his aides besides him their siding with the demons. Thus the hyumans, heroes, leaders, adventurers etc. seeing them makoto’s subordinates siding to demons, wouldnt it feels like its the end of the world already?

  47. the compare and contrast between tateyuu’s atlas and this novel’s mio is just so incredible here

even though they’d both follow their masters to the ends of the world, makoto actually recognizes that he has a responsibility towards his followers to not drag them down with him despite having been so immature and so angry just a couple chapters ago

    so much growth ;_;

  48. I kinda want Raido to be neutral though I wish he does and doesn’t join the demons and makes his own faction the demons have pretty much been acting the same it’s just he had more interactions with hyumans and the demons have a better idea of his strength than the hyumans

    1. Another thing people here keep saying hyumans doing this hyumans doing that to Raido but from what I have read it’s not the whole hyumans, in fact the leaders seem to know now Raido is a valuable asset just unable to contact him now other than the merchants and a noble the rest aren’t doing anything to him

  49. Its good to know that Makoto realizes that he made a few mistakes. The meeting with the rep have really opened his eyes. But it looks like he has has forgotten about the supply chain aspect of the business. But them again at least least he know he made a few mistakes. Hopefully he does not make the same mistakes with the demons if he goes. Such as having very high quality products at dirty cheap prices. Do the thing was he was pretending to be a merchant and running a business wasn’t his actually goal. So he need to start really trying or just stop. But obvious he is going to continues since nothing in this chapter clued into him stopping.

I like that Makoto was worried about Mio falling because of him.

Looking back at that meeting. Makoto as the merchant Raidou was too naive which frustrated the representative. Who probably did like him already to being with.

If Makoto goes to Demon side. I think it will be after the festival and after the summer.

I am surprised there was a chapter release when there was a double release on monday. I was expecting the release of chapter 129

  50. In Tsige it was different, but in Rotsgard I don’t have any backing.

Damn shit, he could just create himself a backing by making everyone think he have some great backing. Just send his followers in his enemies house, threat them, give them a warning and make them keep it secret. At least it should be the minimum and instead of it he just let people put poison, send assassins, sais many insults to him, threat him and at the end he just sais “i’ll reveal everything! I give you money! Please spare me!”-like sentences. F*ck it!

  51. Reading all this reminds me of the movie ‘The Dark Knight’. So basically in the movie Batman glorified the righteous Henry and defeated all gangsters in Gotham so one-sidedly, making them too desperate and had to rely on the infamous madman, Joker. It shows that whenever you show too much power, you become a common enemy of many people and they won’t pull the stops in beating you just because of morality or law.

  54. Well, to be honest, what he has been doing till now is dumb:
    – hyumans side with the Goddess, discriminate against demi-humans, judge him for his appearance and he can’t even properly talk with them.
    – demons fight against the Goddess, have no problems with demi-humans, he can properly talk with them and i don’t think they care much about his face.

It should be obvious where he should be trying to make business, right?
